Do you get tired of hearing the ‘whiner’ in your group place blame on everyone and everything but themselves? Whether it is the economy, the companies fault, or their poor performing coworkers…they have perfected the ‘blame game’.

It can be hard to avoid their negative comments. You may find yourself avoiding their cubical, not sitting next to them in a meeting, and walking by the open spot at the lunch table. Long ago you stopped asking their opinion, or striking up a conversation for the pure joy of it. Avoidance takes you out of the path of their negativity. The good news is you’re sensitive enough to know their blame game doesn’t serve you well – so you avoid. But have you watched what it does to others that get sucked in negative web? So, if you were a ‘super leader’ for a moment what would you do?

-Would you stop avoiding them?
-If you’re in a position to deal with it – would you?
-If you’re a coworker and tired of it – would you let them know how their negativity makes you feel, and that you don’t appreciate it?
-If you been ‘sucked in’ will you walk away next time, or stand up for what you believe?
-If it goes against your core values – will you have elegant courage and say something?

Leadership is about choice, the choice to act on and define the outcome you want to strive for.

-It may be asking them if their negative attitude is working for them?
-It may be putting the no-whiner sign up and letting them know – it’s enough and whining isn’t constructive.
-If it is your coworker; let them know…Nancy, your whining is a real downer, so I’m letting you know I’m not getting sucked into it and will avoid you it you start down that track.
-If you’re having an ‘elegant day’ – you may say – Nancy, I’m sorry you feel that way – however we can’t change it, so lets focus on what we can do and move down a new positive direction.
