I received a sweatshirt from a dear friend. Printed on the front is “I love excel worksheets” – the joke is I love lists. I love keeping track of progress of goals, training schedules, long range plans – it really doesn’t matter what I keep track of. It is the power of the targets that I love, whether of dreams or the simple commitment of logging training schedule results. The excel sheets are my method of ‘reporting in’ my progress.

I know I’m not alone in my ‘tracking quest’.
- watch a runner checking their watch, checking time and heart rate
- how an inline skater looks at the finish clock, at the close of the race
- how a farmer, smiles when he sees the bushel indicator hit a targeted number
- when groups of people, acknowledge what the Dow did that day
- when audience members of ‘Biggest Loser” wait to see what the scale registers

The question is, what markers do you watch in your career, in your business results? Do team members know where the department key performance indicators are at?

Take the time to discuss the top 3 key items with your team, check your pace, and expect to erase at times. It is about the journey, about adapting and adjusting and achieving a new level of performance.
