Have you ever talked with an athlete who shared their reflections on a race? In a conversation with my daughter she was reflecting on her first sprint triathlon. Sharing what had went well in her training, where she would adjust, how she could improve her time, and determining where/when the next race would be. While it wasn’t perfect in her eyes, she was looking forward to future races and to improve her time. Adjust and adapt at its finest.
When I hear clients and their employees tentative about setting goals and establishing measurements I can’t help but feel what a loss of opportunity occurs when individuals, teams and companies avoid setting targets and measurements. The value of setting and tracking results isn’t just about achieving a positive bottom-line, but rather developing individuals focus and clarity. Measurements provide a cue to the employee of gaps and areas to adjust. Clearly it provides an internal assessment for them to celebrate and stretch their ability. Key leaders and performers know how to adjust and adapt how to use the measurements as guides, and as a tool to improve their performance with a focus on the end result.
