Recently I had the opportunity to help a client interview for a new addition to their team.   One of my favorite interview questions is …”think of someone you admire or possibly have thought of as your hero?”

I wait until I see they have someone in mind – it is easy to tell when you look at their eyes.  Sometimes the responses are a ‘suit response’ – they are trying to give an answer they think we want to hear…they lose points with me when that occurs.   However, when they share a gut level, true response – one in which they truly reflect and were inspired by – it is a gold mine.   They will generally share a bit of a story of why this person was their hero…what they admired…and respected.   This little question has shed light on what individual values and it has helped me to understand what they will bring to a team and also if the company environment will value their uniqueness.

Leadership is about knowing and living your core values.  It is about being true to what inspires you and also being clear on imprint you want to leave.
