On vacation I met an older gentleman as he was watching the sunset.  We had an interesting conversation from business, economy, to beautiful sunsets.   He had time to talk, I had time to listen.  His 89 years of history were interesting, and he still walked with a bit of energy.   He validated something for me that I had been working on. A year ago I made a conscience choice to really find the happiness in one's soul.

What is your biggest dream…that dream that you hesitate to say aloud?

Have you thought why you hesitate?  Is it you’re worried what others may think?  Or possibly that if you verbalize it – people will expect you to achieve it?

What are you fearful of?   Is it a loss of independence, of financial security, is it someone's approval, loss of position, fear of making a mistake, fear of the unknown….the list is different for each of us.  Getting to know what you’re afraid of and your reaction when you’re fearful is critical to dealing with the situation.  Fear can paralyze you from moving forward.  The next time you feel stuck, and unable to adjust…jot down what you’re fearful of…dig deep, and be honest with yourself.   Next list how it makes you feel.  Make a conscience effort to adjust – and move through the fear.  You may just surprise yourself.

As leadership coaches we sometimes use the phrase of ‘Freeze Zone’.   It is the time when a leader freezes – they find it hard to do what is right, it may be when they get fearful, or are just unsure.  Knowing what your personal ‘freeze zone’ is will be the first step to adjusting your leadership actions.
