1. Stubbornness
2. Being closed to ideas, adjustments, feedback
3. Not accepting accountability and responsibility
4. Ignoring bad behavior
5. Greed
6. Arrogance
7. Lack of focus, clarity of objectives
8. Dishonesty
9. Playing the blame game
10. Uninspired

Leaders sometimes lose their way. That doesn’t make it right, but it does make them human. Take a moment and assess your traits – do you sometimes ignore bad behavior? (Sign #4) Maybe, you’re accepting of bad behavior, or when you see it you walk away. For some leaders, it may be that they think they know all the answers, so they stop listening until it becomes a crisis. (Sign #2) What both responses have in common is that their avoidance won’t help. It may feel easier to ‘avoid’ but is it ‘better’?

Have you ever talked with someone that just started a job and when they responded to your question – how do you like your new job? They hesitate, and respond with “its pretty good – people are nice, but something is missing.” Likely today, they’ll also add “ I’m just glad I have a job.”

Recently I was asked what my 3 favorite TV shows were; after I saw them listed in print; NCIS, The Unit and an HGTV show on remodeling – I noticed an interesting pattern. NCIS goal is to solve a case, The Unit script is to complete a specific mission, and the HGTV show is to change a home from old to renewed. Each has a very clear end result. I thought of the similarity to why I enjoy my career…it is the movement to a desired outcome.
