Having 11 room remodel projects under my belt, you would think I would have the visualizing skill down. But I was stumped. We had decided to have the house sided, which created an opportunity to change a little more than the siding. I had watch HGTV for hours, looked at books, drove thru neighborhoods looking for ideas…but I was stumped. I knew siding, framing the windows and adding a new entryway made sense, but I also knew it meant that one side of the house would be changed, a large deck removed…just why couldn’t I visualize a new look and feel? I put into practice, an activity we use with clients.

I received a sweatshirt from a dear friend. Printed on the front is “I love excel worksheets” – the joke is I love lists. I love keeping track of progress of goals, training schedules, long range plans – it really doesn’t matter what I keep track of. It is the power of the targets that I love, whether of dreams or the simple commitment of logging training schedule results. The excel sheets are my method of ‘reporting in’ my progress.

Sorting out the noise is a phase we use when we work with teams and individuals.

What does it mean? When we work with teams, and they start to open up we let the ‘noise roll out’. For a couple of reasons, if you want to adjust/change behavior – you will need to get the issues put it on the table in a respectful format.

Do any of these traits sound like you?

1. I know what I want and how I want it done.
2. I just like things done a certain way, do I really have to adapt?
3. I know what I’m doing, but if the staff would just be patient…
4. My way is proven, why waste time and effort.
5. I just don’t trust we’ll get the end result I want with different approaches.
