Three key words can keep you on track as you work to adjust your leadership skills.
Reflect, Respond, Remember

Here is an example. Have you felt ignored at times, you wonder if people hear your ideas, and at times you feel you’re blending into the wallpaper, you want to be recognized as a leader, but your progression hasn’t met your expectations?

The next time you’re in a situation try this: Possibly it is your weekly team meeting, instead of volunteering to take notes, and providing a lack luster update on your projects. Reframe your update; focus on project, progress and intended outcome…but don’t forget the ‘feel’ part. It is what gives the ‘sense’ of the project. It may be I feel the client is nervous about the findings. Ask the team, can anyone shed any light on client x? Why they may have that reaction? So in your presentation share but also ask their thoughts. The idea is to show that you’re thinking bigger than a process and engaging others.

Reflect on your project update. Were you ignored? Did it feel different, what went well, what could have been stronger, clearer, more focused?

Respond to the necessary changes. Adjust and adapt until you move into what feels like perfect rhythm or being in the zone. Were you too detailed, unclear, or did your adjustments have an impact?

Remember your new target. Leadership lion or lioness – elegant, smooth and confident. Remember the type of leader you would like to be described as. Leaders are not carbon copies, the best have uniquely identified what makes them special – they use their strengths and build upon them.

Leadership is a journey, not an overnight transformation. Keep the focus and be open to adjusting and adapting.
