Do any of these traits sound like you?

1. I know what I want and how I want it done.
2. I just like things done a certain way, do I really have to adapt?
3. I know what I’m doing, but if the staff would just be patient…
4. My way is proven, why waste time and effort.
5. I just don’t trust we’ll get the end result I want with different approaches.

Take a look at your team; do they shut down in meetings or in interactions with you?
Are your expectations so detailed that it shuts down creativity, ownership, accountability, and change? Do you really know very many adults that love to be ‘told what to do’?

You may think that’s not me – I’m sure it’s not me. The question is before you give an answer to a process, do you ask for others input? Is it the one time you talk less and listen more? Or, do you really look for confirmation of your ideas?

A small task to test your own adaptability. At your next meeting, ask what they think, how it could work, what their process would be? Sit back and truly listen. Less control may really give you more freedom
