. Cutbacks, layoffs, right sizing, mergers are one wave of the new economy. The second wave is the ‘rumble’ heard from the survivors. The employees whose job roles have expanded, and who are told they should appreciate having a job. They may be feeling an intense reaction toward their company, and likely it isn’t gratefulness – but rather a surge of resentment. Employees have been asked to take on jobs from the newly departed employees. Sometimes without training, or a fair assessment of how to fit in the additional workload into their work duties. This isn’t the whiney employee, but rather one that has proven their can do attitude. They now may be feeling like they are ‘serving an unappreciative master’. The culture of the company has changed, and it is all about the company bottom line, and employees are settling in until…..they have a choice.
Can a company culture balance a bottom-line profit and a respectful culture? Of course – the challenge during difficult times is to protect the respectful culture…to employees, to those that are laid off, and to customers.
Wiff and Krutza are leadership coaches that help companies find the balance between profit and culture so that employees aren’t waiting for better times. |
