What feels like common sense and a basic foundation sometimes gets missed in busy lives and workplaces. Years ago, I heard a CEO remark that first you must give respect in order to receive respect. That line stuck with me but even more impactful was what he said and did. Here are the top five actions that you can do each and every day.

1. Return phone calls, return emails; even it you’re still undecided on the action you may take. If not, the message is dismissive to the other…the other person isn’t important, no need to respond.
2. When you’re running late, whether for meeting, office visit, or dinner – call and let them know. If not, your behavior shouts your time is more important than theirs.
3. Don’t just be a taker….be a giver…be responsive. Most people avoid “takers”. Takers tend to be arrogant and self centered and usually “suck” energy from relationships.
4. If you’re unable to commit, say it, don’t just let the unknown ‘drag on’ A decision to delay, or adjust, or reconsider are decisions…they should be communicated if you want respect in return.
5. Don’t be a prima dona, remember your actions, or lack of actions are impacting others.
