Over the weekend my husband and I worked on a remodeling project. You would love to have everything go with ease as it does on HGTV, but for us remodeling isn’t about how you think it should work – but rather what works within the confines of a 100 plus year old home. The stud walls aren’t always located 16” apart, the floors aren’t always level, and there are numerous challenges that you just can’t plan for.

I couldn’t help but think how similar remodeling is to leadership. The good leaders know how to adjust their course to meet upcoming challenges. It is the talented leader who can visualize where employees will thrive. It is the genuine leader who knows how to best match employee’s talents to bring a team’s performance to a new level.

Our home has history. It has been adjusted over the course of 5 generations to meet the changing needs of its occupants. Its easy to look back and to visualize the changes the home has gone through. Leaders who learn to adjust and adapt with a sense of heart and soul will have a lasting impact, on their business and with their employees, much like a home that dates back to the late 1890’s.

Have the courage to visualize what you want your organization to look and feel like. Maybe its time to adjust and remodel.
